This is such an interesting topic! It's hard for me to compare how I am online versus how I am in person, because online I mostly interact with friends, of which I have very few in person. But I can definitely trace a significant part of how I talk to wanting to be non-threatening -- partly out of genuine concern for other people's comfort, but also in large part for my own.
