Gods are notoriously hard to kill. Some are harder to kill than others. Loki knows this from experience. He has tried to kill Thor often enough, he's actually surprised when he does kill his 'brother'.

It's actually quite simple. Loki's fascinated that it took him this long to kill Thor in this way. He knows he's already killed Thor's spirit in some way. Having a traitor for a brother would do that to a warrior like Thor. What he hadn't known, was that he'd weakened Thor's heart.

____

Thor gasps, and freezes in place, frozen in shock. Thunder growls overhead and lightning flashes weakly in his eyes. The asgardian prince stares into Loki's dark green eyes, and then down to the dagger lodged in his heart. Loki is frozen as well, almost against his will, he twists the blade and Thor groans, and they both sink to their knees.

"Brother," Thor moans, and blood spills from a cut in his lip, he'd bitten it sometime during the fight.

Loki pulls the dagger gently from Thor's chest and his brother chokes on the pain. He's probably never felt a killing blow, felt the cold fingers of death on this shoulder. Loki has, when he fell into the abyss. Loki hadn't died then, but he doubted Thor would survive this wound, as superficial as the wound was.

Thor reaches up to press his fingers to the seeping wound, he winces and then presses his bloody fingers against the side of Loki's face, he drags his fingers down Loki's cheek and Loki can feel the warmth of Thor's blood beginning to drip down his face. He feels a chill go through his spirit, as the blood cools on his face and his brother slips to lie on his side blood -too much blood- beginning to pool around him. Thor reaches out for Loki, blood staining his fingertips, blood seeping from the cut on his lip, blood pouring from his chest as his supposedly immortal heart tries to beat around the hole in it. Thor reaches out to Loki eyes pleading for something, the lightning making them for once hard to read. Loki drops the dagger, the metal clinking against the ground, and catches his brother's hand.

"Well," Thor rasps, "now that you've killed me, what are you going to do now?" Thor's clutching at Loki's hand like it's his last connection to a life he's soon going to vanish from. Loki's throat is aching, and his eyes are heavy. He feels like he's the one with the wound in his heart. He feels like a piece of him is dying. He shouldn't feel this way, he has no real connection to Thor, they're not even related by blood! So why does he feel like a knife just twisted its way into his heart?

"I don't know." Loki whispers in answer to Thor's question. Thor chuckles and for once the laugh does not incense Loki, just makes his throat tighten and his heart ache. The laugh is a weak echo of what it used to be, now full of the realization of death, not full of life. Thor's blood on his face burns, like it's liquid fire, poison seeping into Loki's skin. He reaches up to wipe it away but Thor catches his other hand, grip surprisingly strong.

"No." Thor mutters, "I will die seeing my blood on your face. I will die knowing that my brother has killed me out of hatred, and I will see the blood of my heart stain your face. For you have my heart Loki, you always have had it. You have taken the last of my hope away, and the last of my hope was all that was keeping me alive."

"Brother," Loki voice wobbles, his silver tongue failing him in the minute of his greatest triumph. It's strange, it doesn't feel like a triumph. He can feel the other heroes outside of his circle of magic, screaming at him, yelling profanities and trying with all of their might to get through the circle. Loki hears none of them, and has eyes only for his dying brother. The circle will hold, the blood of the Thunderer sealing it now, when Thor dies, only Loki and Odin himself will be able to escape or enter the circle, and he will not be able to move his brother's body from it unless he carries him.

"Oh Loki," a deep voice intones, a familiar voice, not the voice of Thor, but almost an older version of it, Loki doesn't even turn to look. "What have you done." Odin speaks.

"I am a prince of Jotunheim, I have done my duty to my father by killing the rival kingdom's prince."

"You are no prince of Jotunheim. You were raised in Asgard and a prince of Asgard you are. As is your brother. The punishment for a brother killing a brother is the death of the brother that killed."

"I accept my punishment." Loki says numbly, and the lightning in Thor's eyes strengthens and there is another crack of thunder in the sky.

"NO." Thor says harshly, clutching Loki's hands painfully. "I will not have you die. I was willing to die to give you some sort of peace, but not if you are to die with me. You will not die."

"Oh brother," Loki says, "Nothing in this life would give me peace. Only oblivion. I would live through your eyes, share in your life's experiences, and be with you always. In fact, I think I shall do these things."

This time it is Odin's turn to say no as Loki reaches within his body to the core of his magic, the magic that keeps him alive and in Aseir form, he pools all of his magic into his lips, his mouth, his hands, and, clutching Thor's hands, He lies down swiftly next to his brother and presses his lips to Thor's. Pushing with his magic like the blade that had pierced Thor's heart, only this time, bringing life instead of death. Thor's back arches, Odin takes a slow step forward, like walking through molasses, but it is too late for even the all-father to do anything. Loki lets go of one of Thor's hands and presses one of his fingers into Thor's wound, touching Thor's heart he breathes his lifeforce down Thor's throat, forces his essence into Thor's heart, into Thor's spirit. He becomes an essential part of Thor, replacing the lost hope in his brother like the perfect key to a lock.

He flickers in Thor's eyes, like he is becoming the illusions he is so fond of projecting. Through the thunder in Thor's eyes, he sees an ice storm coming. He tears his eyes away from Thor's face and stares into the skies. He smiles and closes his eyes to his brother's scream and his father's shout.

When he opens his eyes again, he is Thor, and Thor is Loki. They are the missing parts of each other, and together they will make so much more of a whole then when they were separate.
